Summary:
The Medical Research Advisor II will support NAMRU EURAFCENT's BPDRP in the design, execution, and oversight of research activities focused on emerging infectious diseases. This role entails extensive field and laboratory engagement across diverse geographical regions, providing high-level scientific leadership and hands-on research execution.
The work under this contract will be performed at the U.S. Naval Medical Research Unit EURAFCENT offices in Cairo, Egypt, or at other designated locations in special circumstances.
Essential Job Functions:
- Assist with the design and implementation of field and laboratory research protocols for emerging infectious diseases.
- Lead the development of research proposals, technical protocols, and study plans for government review and approval.
- Conduct and oversee bio surveillance sample collection (including blood draws) and manage associated documentation and logistics.
- Perform or direct laboratory analyses of specimens, including molecular testing and assay development.
- Collaborate in the design and validation of clinical and laboratory testing procedures.
- Maintain comprehensive, secure data repositories that house research and bio surveillance information.
- Conduct epidemiological analysis based on collected field and lab data.
- Monitor safety and medical readiness of research personnel, including physicals, lab tests, and vaccinations.
- Author scientific manuscripts, reports, and presentations for internal and external dissemination.
- Provide regular progress updates and serve as a subject matter expert to government stakeholders and international partners.
Necessary Skills and Knowledge:
- Ability to design studies and monitor the progress of research activities.
- Proficiency in word-processing, spreadsheet, database and presentations.
- Fluency in oral and written English (level IV (as defined by the U.S. Department of State)) and Arabic.
- Good communication skills.
- Ability to independently prepare and write regular reports.
- Ability to communicate and work effectively with colleagues at different levels of the organization.
Minimum Qualifications:
- PhD degree in biomedical sciences plus 15 years of related experience.
- Experience in scientific and manuscript writing.
- Travel Requirements: Travel may include Djibouti, Jordan, Nigeria, and other countries in Africa and the Middle East, depending on research requirements.
- Must be a US citizen.
