Summary:
The Senior Medical Epidemiologist & Infection Control Resident Advisor will serve as a senior scientific advisor under the NAMRU EURAFCENT contract. This role supports the command’s mission to conduct infectious disease surveillance and public health research in partnership with U.S. and host nation military and civilian entities. The advisor will oversee infection control and epidemiological initiatives in developing country contexts, provide technical guidance, and ensure research activities align with U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) and federal guidelines.

Essential Job Functions:
- Serve as the subject matter expert on epidemiology and infection control for ongoing and emerging public health research projects.
- Provide scientific leadership and oversight in study design, data analysis, and interpretation of epidemiological findings.
- Collaborate with host nation governments, local partners, and U.S. Government agencies on international public health research initiatives.
- Lead and contribute to the preparation of scientific manuscripts, technical reports, and peer-reviewed publications.
- Design and monitor infectious disease surveillance systems, including metrics for effectiveness and response.
- Guide infection prevention and control strategies aligned with best practices and host nation capabilities.
- Participate in the management and strategic planning of research and development operations within U.S. military laboratory environments.
- Mentor and advise junior researchers, medical officers, and resident staff.
- Ensure compliance with DOD, federal, and international research regulations and ethical standards.
- Provide regular written and oral briefings and status reports to leadership and stakeholders.
Necessary Skills and Knowledge:
- Ability to work both independently and on a team in an interdisciplinary environment.
- Ability to monitor the surveillance progress and design studies.
- Proficiency in word-processing, spreadsheet, basic statistics, database and presentation.
- Fluency in oral and written English.
- Good communication skills.
- Ability to prepare and write regular reports.
- Ability to communicate and work effectively with colleagues at different levels of the organization.
Minimum Qualifications:
- M.D. or Doctor of Public Health (Ph.D.) degree with completion of formal graduate medical training and 10 years of related experience and work in developing countries.
- Experience in scientific and manuscript writing.
- Experience in research collaborations in an international setting along with both US Government and host nation agencies in public health research.
- Experience in positions in various level of management of a R&D U.S. military laboratory to ensure familiarity with DOD regulations and instructions and U.S. federal laws.
- Travel Requirements: Travel may include Djibouti, Jordan, Nigeria, and other countries in Africa and the Middle East, depending on research requirements.
