Summary:
The Medical Research Advisor – Infection Control will provide senior-level scientific and operational support to NAMRU-EURAFCENT’s Viral and Zoonotic Diseases Research Program (VZDRP). This role focuses on leading infection control and disease surveillance initiatives across Egypt, the Eastern Mediterranean Region, and select West African countries. The Advisor will ensure high-quality implementation of bio-surveillance activities, laboratory diagnostics, external quality assurance programs, and training efforts while coordinating closely with local collaborators and the NAMRU-EURAFCENT principal investigator (PI).

Essential Job Functions:
- Develop, manage, and maintain complex surveillance databases for clinical and research studies, including molecular diagnostics, serology, and virus isolation data.
- Perform timely data entry, cleaning, validation, and statistical analysis of laboratory results; generate scientific reports in support of surveillance projects.
- Design and implement data collection tools for smart devices; integrate automated reporting features for field and laboratory use.
- Provide data-related technical assistance to Ministry of Health and academic collaborators across multiple countries.
- Review monthly data submissions from international testing sites and generate weekly/monthly reports for internal tracking and evaluation.
- Ensure data quality assurance and control through routine monitoring, site visits, and feedback to site collaborators.
- Collaborate with Principal Investigators to support protocol development, grant writing, data interpretation, and reporting.
- Facilitate procurement and inventory tracking of data-related software, IT equipment, and other digital tools required for surveillance operations.
- Support the development of standard operating procedures (SOPs) and data management training for collaborators and laboratory personnel.
- Participate in planning and implementation of research protocols, including EQA programs and onsite training visits.
- Provide capacity building and technical training on data systems and molecular biology tools to stakeholders within and outside of Egypt.
Necessary Skills and Knowledge:
- The ability to work both independently and effectively with interdisciplinary colleagues at different levels of the organization.
- Excellent communication skills.
- Fluent in English and Arabic.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Bachelor’s Degree in computer science.
- At least 6 years of experience working in area of public health surveillance projects, computer science, and data management.
- Experience in designing databases and automated analysis tools.
- Experience in big data analysis and statistics.
- Experience in designing and developing data collection tools on smart devices.
- Experience in the structure, interface, and the software content of the current existing electronic surveillance systems in Egypt and Jordan.
- Experience in effectively using data analysis programs such as Epi-Info, SPSS, SAS, R, or other advanced data analysis programs.
- At least 6 years of experience in providing technical support to data management and improving data quality and support principal investigators for data management and analysis in Arabic countries for MOH and other international partners.
- Travel Requirements: Travel may include Djibouti, Jordan, Nigeria, and other countries in Africa and the Middle East, depending on research requirements.
- Must be a US citizen.
