Summary:
The Medical Research Advisor II with expertise in Medical Parasitology and Entomology will support ongoing entomological and vector-borne disease research conducted under the Vector Biology Research Program (VBRP) in Egypt and across partnering countries including Nigeria, Ghana, Jordan, Djibouti, and others.
The work under this contract will be performed at the U.S. Naval Medical Research Unit EURAFCENT offices in Cairo, Egypt, or at other designated locations in special circumstances.
Essential Job Functions:
- Serve as subject matter expert in medical parasitology and vector-borne diseases.
- Lead and manage collaborative entomological field and laboratory studies across multiple countries.
- Develop and write research protocols and project proposals in accordance with NAMRU and U.S. Government standards.
- Conduct data analysis, prepare technical reports, and author manuscripts for publication in peer-reviewed scientific journals.
- Coordinate and manage field research operations, including planning field trips, overseeing logistics, and supervising research personnel.
- Analyze vector and pathogen data to assess health risks and guide vector control efforts.
- Contribute to capacity building efforts and scientific exchange with partner research institutions.
- Ensure timely delivery of technical deliverables, reports, and publications to the Government PI.
- Represent NAMRU-EURAFCENT in scientific meetings and collaborations, as required.
Necessary Skills and Knowledge:
- Ability to conceive research ideas and write successful research protocols according to established guidelines, report research results timely, subject to the request of the Government PI.
- Professional knowledge of Medical Parasitology and Entomology including but not limited to identification and diagnosis of the different types of pathogens (Parasites and Viruses) and their vectors skills and abilities.
- Ability to independently plan and organize independent research, field trips and personnel.
- Shall be able to write original manuscripts for publishing in international journals.
- Excellent communication skills (both oral and written).
- The Contractor shall have professional problem-solving, organizational and time management skills.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Ph.D. or M.D. in Biomedical sciences, with a minimum of 10 years postdoctoral experience.
- Minimum of 7-10 years’ experience in laboratory and field research and at least 5-7 years as PI for independent research and project management and at least 5-7 publications in peer-reviewed journals.
- Language Proficiency: English language (written and spoken, level IV (as defined by the U.S. Department of State)), Arabic language (fluent spoken and reading). All studies are conducted in countries where either or both English and Arabic language are used. All reports and deliverables to the Government shall be written in English.
- Travel Requirements: Travel may include Djibouti, Jordan, Nigeria, and other countries in Africa and the Middle East, depending on research requirements.
- Must be a US citizen.
