Summary:
The Research Technologist – Virology will provide expert support for bio-surveillance activities related to viral and zoonotic disease research and infection control. This includes executing advanced laboratory testing, ensuring quality control in regional labs, coordinating training efforts, and supporting surveillance and epidemiological studies across Egypt and designated international locations. The position plays a vital role in supporting NAMRU-EURAFCENT's mission in infectious disease detection, surveillance, and response.
The work under this contract will be performed at the U.S. Naval Medical Research Unit EURAFCENT offices in Cairo, Egypt, or at other designated locations in special circumstances.
Essential Job Functions:
- Perform data entry, statistical analysis, and prepare scientific reports of laboratory test results.
- Develop, establish, and execute laboratory tests for clinical and research studies, including molecular assays, serology, and virus isolation.
- Assist in the implementation of an External Quality Assurance (EQA) program in public health and university laboratories.
- Conduct a wide range of diagnostic procedures on biological specimens from surveillance projects in Egypt and abroad.
- Provide onsite and refresher training to collaborating sites on lab equipment, surveillance methods, biosafety, and sample collection.
- Coordinate with study PIs and collaborating institutions to ensure consistent execution of surveillance protocols.
- Conduct monitoring visits to local and international sites to evaluate performance and compliance with protocols.
- Review lab-generated data monthly; submit weekly and monthly progress reports to the PI.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Necessary Skills and Knowledge:
- Good communication skills.
- Proficiency in English and Arabic is required.
- Proficiency in word-processing, spreadsheet, database and presentation.
- Professional knowledge in principles, theories, and practices in standard bacteriology and virology methods.
- A professional background in the molecular and immunology assays as well as virus isolation procedures.
- Ability to follow standard operating procedures.
- Ability to work effectively with colleagues at different levels of the organization.
- Advanced knowledge of laboratory safety procedures.
- Professional background in the Laboratory Quality Management System (LQMS).
Minimum Qualifications:
- M.Sc. degree in microbiology or a directly related scientific field.
- A minimum of 5 years of experience in microbiology and infectious diseases.
- Travel Requirements: Travel may include Djibouti, Jordan, Nigeria, and other countries in Africa and the Middle East, depending on research requirements.
- Must be a US citizen.
