Interpret domestic and international sanctions (UAE, US, UK, EU, UN etc.) and maintain sufficient awareness and knowledge of sanctions that impact the bank and/or its branches or subsidiaries.
Conduct end to end meticulous review of cases escalated from sanctions alert reviews (or otherwise) pertaining to potential illegal activity or activity in violation of economic or trade sanctions or activity that does not fall within the bank’s acceptable parameters.
Ensure adherence to Group Sanctions Policy, including but not limited to related Sanctions Guidance and Operating Procedures.
Support Compliance Manager in identifying Sanctions themes and trends and improve sanctions risk management capability.
Key Responsibility Areas
- Maintain a detailed understanding of domestic and international sanctions and export controls regulatory requirements, internal policies, standards & procedures, industry guidance, applicable typologies and red flags.
- Investigate customer activity (which may involve large data) from a sanctions and export control risks standpoint across business segments and portfolios to assess whether the activity falls within the bank’s acceptable parameters.
- Apply analytical techniques to complex information sets to make logical and supported recommendations.
- Exercise good judgement in making decisions or recommendations in relation to case investigations.
- Document findings in manual and/or automated case management system to prepare reports to management as required.
- Handle Sanctions referrals as per the bank’s policy, ensuring no breach of the applicable sanctions policies, standards and guidances. Refer to Compliance Manager where required.
- Develop and maintain appropriate policies and procedures relevant to the function
- Provide effective support and maintain metrics and statistics as per internal procedures and prepare monthly and ad hoc management reports
- Identify and escalate areas requiring attention or strengthening and recommend changes and improvements in line with industry standards and applicable regulations.
- Record keeping
- All records of the unit must be kept in a confidential and secure state
- Adhere to record retention policy and the SOP guidelines
- Maintain effective working relationships with Business, Operations and other Compliance functions.
- Assist in Compliance projects as and when required including effective deployment of system and procedural changes as required.
Operating Environment, Framework and Boundaries, Working Relationships
Effective knowledge of the Bank’s Compliance, Sanctions, AML and KYC / CDD policies and procedures.
Adequate and detailed understanding of various sanction programmes, e.g., OFAC, UN, UK, EU, UAE Target Financial Sanctions etc.
Experience within the financial services industry.
Understanding of relevant business and operations processes that support sanctions screening.
Good understanding of core banking systems and their interaction/use.
