Summary:
Medical Research Advisor I (Entomological Sciences) will support entomological field and laboratory research aimed at understanding the distribution, diversity, and role of arthropod vectors in the transmission of pathogens involved in acute febrile illness. The work contributes to collaborative studies across Egypt and NAMRU's regional partners in Nigeria, Ghana, Jordan, Djibouti, and other countries.
The work under this contract will be performed at the U.S. Naval Medical Research Unit EURAFCENT offices in Cairo, Egypt, or at other designated locations in special circumstances.
Essential Job Functions:
- Serve as a senior scientific expert in medical entomology, leading research efforts on vector ecology and vector-borne disease risk.
- Independently conceptualize, design, develop, and implement entomological research protocols, subject to government PI review.
- Conduct field studies to assess environmental and geographic factors influencing vector abundance and diversity.
- Manage and supervise vector identification and laboratory analyses including insecticide resistance testing and pathogen detection.
- Provide technical expertise in statistical analysis and use of statistical software to support data interpretation.
- Lead and contribute to the authorship of scientific manuscripts for publication in peer-reviewed international journals.
- Present findings at national and international scientific conferences and forums.
- Develop and deliver training workshops, including preparation of training materials, agendas, and curricula, for host-nation researchers and public health partners.
- Coordinate with host-nation collaborators, government partners, and multidisciplinary teams across countries where English and Arabic are spoken.
- Assist in preparing reports and deliverables to the U.S. Government in English, ensuring scientific accuracy and compliance with contractual objectives.
- Offer vector control and surveillance support when needed in response to emerging public health threats.
Necessary Skills and Knowledge:
- Professional knowledge of medical entomology including but not limited to identification of the different types of vectors transmitting infectious diseases; culture media, evaluation of insecticide resistance of the different vectors, above average knowledge of statistics, computer based statistical programs and knowledge of computer work data entry.
- Ability to independently proceed from research idea, to design, development, writing and implementation of a scientific protocol subject to Government Principal Investigator approval and submission by active duty or GS personnel.
- Able, independently, to write technical, scientific papers of quality to be accepted for publication in peer reviewed international journals.
- Excellent communication and leadership skills with an ability to effectively work within a multi-disciplinary team.
- Experienced in and demonstrate proficiency in developing training curricula, designing training workshops, putting the agenda, and preparing training material, in addition to efficient presenting skills.
- Ability to present study data at international scientific meetings.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Doctoral Degree in Entomology or Microbiology with minimum of 12 years post doctorate experience.
- Minimum of 10 years of experience in laboratory, Field research - of which 8-10 years as PI for independent research, and at least 7-9 publications in peer reviewed journals.
- Language Proficiency: Level IV (as defined by the U.S. Department of State) of written and spoken Arabic and English; Ability to communicate in French is preferential but not required. All studies are conducted in countries where either or both English and Arabic language are used. All reports and deliverables to the Government shall be written in English.
- Travel Requirements: Travel may include Djibouti, Jordan, Nigeria, and other countries in Africa and the Middle East, depending on research requirements.
- Must be a US citizen.
