Summary:
The Research Technologist – Entomologist will support ongoing research under the Vector Biology Research Program (VBRP) in Egypt. This position plays a key role in entomological surveillance and field studies focused on arthropod vectors of pathogens that may cause acute febrile illnesses. Research will contribute to multinational collaborative projects across Nigeria, Ghana, Jordan, Djibouti, and additional countries.
The work under this contract will be performed at the U.S. Naval Medical Research Unit EURAFCENT offices in Cairo, Egypt, or at other designated locations in special circumstances.
Essential Job Functions:
- Conduct field-based entomological research and arthropod vector collections in Egypt and collaborating countries.
- Identify and classify vector species, with specialization in sand flies and ticks.
- Perform laboratory procedures, including Leishmania culture and isolation.
- Analyze data related to vector abundance, diversity, and distribution to assess disease transmission risks.
- Collaborate with international research partners and coordinate with governmental and academic institutions.
- Contribute to scientific publications, reports, and presentations.
- Provide guidance and training to junior staff or visiting scientists as needed.
- Support vector control assessments and intervention evaluations in field sites.
Necessary Skills and Knowledge:
- Thorough knowledge of vector ecology, bionomics, and classification.
- Advanced experience and skills in the identification of sand flies and ticks.
- Advanced skills in performing Leishmania cultures and isolation.
- Excellent working knowledge of computer programs such as Excel, Word and Power Point, and basic knowledge of statistical programs.
Minimum Qualifications:
- At least a MSc. Degree in Entomology.
- At least 10 years in Entomological research.
- At least 7 years of professional level experience in field entomology, preferably in the Middle Eastern region.
- Language Proficiency: Level III (as defined by the U.S. Department of State), good command of verbal and written English and Arabic.
- Travel Requirements: Travel may include Djibouti, Jordan, Nigeria, and other countries in Africa and the Middle East, depending on research requirements.
- Must be a US citizen.
